Frequently asked questions
What is the Hijri date today?
Today's Hijri date is shown at the top of this page. It is calculated for Saudi Arabia from the Umm al-Qura calendar, using the current date in Riyadh.
Which calendar does Saudi Arabia use?
Saudi Arabia's official Hijri calendar is Umm al-Qura, a calculated calendar published in advance. The start of Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr and Dhu al-Hijjah is additionally confirmed by official moon sighting announcements.
When does the Hijri date change?
In Islamic tradition the day begins at sunset, so the next Hijri day is often said to start the evening before. Calendars, documents and this page change the date at midnight, matching the civil Gregorian date.
Why is the Hijri date different in another country or app?
Some countries and apps use local moon sighting or a different calculation (such as the tabular Islamic calendar). Their date can differ from Umm al-Qura by one day, occasionally two. If your local date differs, use the adjustment option below the date to shift it; the setting is saved only in your browser.
