When is Eid al-Fitr?

Eid al-Fitr falls on the first day of Shawwal, the month after Ramadan. Its Gregorian date moves about 11 days earlier each year.

Before the Eid prayer, Muslims pay Zakat al-Fitr, a small charity given on behalf of each family member so that everyone can celebrate.

How is the date of Eid confirmed?

Islamic months begin with the new crescent moon. Saudi Arabia's Umm al-Qura calendar calculates month starts in advance, but the start of Ramadan and the two Eids is announced officially after the crescent is sighted (or not) on the evening of the 29th. If the sighting differs from the calculation, the actual date can move by one day. Other countries make their own announcements, so dates can also differ between countries.

Is Eid al-Fitr a public holiday in Saudi Arabia?

Yes. Eid al-Fitr is an official holiday in Saudi Arabia. The exact number of days off for the public and private sectors is set by the authorities each year.
